Last Full Measure’ set for filming in South Carolina

Posted by Janett on September 16, 2007

Production on “The Last Full Measure” is scheduled to begin in South Carolina during October, according to Columbia filmmaker Julian Adams.

The movie tells the story of Ohio native William Pitsenbarger, who died in the Vietnam War and was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2000. It stars Robert Duvall, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, Andy Garcia, Laurence Fishburne and Amy Madigan.

Adams, who recently saw his independent film “The Last Confederate” released theatrically and on DVD, will be a producer and actor on “The Last Full Measure.”

Filming will be in Columbia and Charleston as well as Washington, D.C., Los Angeles and possibly Thailand, Adams said. Pre-production work is taking place now.

The film focuses on Pitsenbarger’s bravery and sacrifice and the lengthy efforts to secure him the Medal of Honor, which finally became a reality 34 years after his death.

On April 11, 1966, the 21-year-old Pitsenbarger was nearing his 300th combat mission when some men with the U.S. Army’s 1st Division were ambushed and pinned down in an area 45 miles east of Saigon. “Pits,” as he was known to his friends, was on one of the helicopters rushed to the scene to lift out the wounded.

Pits was lowered to the ground, where he went to work on those injured. As six of them were flown to an aid station, Pits stayed behind to continue assisting the infantrymen who were still alive. When the choppers returned for a second time, Pits had a chance to save himself but again elected to stay behind to treat the wounded while also engaging in combat.

That evening, as he continued to assist his comrades, Pitsenbarger was killed by Viet Cong snipers. When his body was found the next day, one hand held a rifle and the other a medical kit.

Duvall will play Pitsenbarger’s father, Frank, who was behind the push to get the Medal of Honor for his son, Adams said.

In the second half of the film, Willis, Freeman, Garcia and Fishburne play older versions of the soldiers who served with Pitsenbarger.

“The Last Full Measure,” which will be released by New Line Cinema, is being produced by John Watson, who also oversaw the making of such films as “Backdraft” with Kurt Russell and Robert De Niro and “Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves” starring Kevin Costner and Freeman.

Todd Robinson (“Lonely Hearts,” “White Squall”) is the director and writer on the project. _krdDartInc++; document.write(”);
